The October SMR (Security Maintenance Release) for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 comes with firmware version F936BXXS1AVJ3, at least in Israel. Other countries in Asia, as well as Europe, Australia, Latin America, and Africa, should also get the new software package with the same build number. It may vary slightly in the US and Canada, though. Regardless of the firmware version, this update brings the latest vulnerability fixes from Samsung and Google to the new foldable. The Korean firm’s security bulletin mentions patches for more than 30 Android OS vulnerabilities, including one critical flaw. These issues affect the whole Android ecosystem and were patched by Google. Additionally, Samsung patched 18 Galaxy-specific issues as well. These issues only affect Android smartphones and tablets from the Korean behemoth. Called Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items, one of the critical issues patched by Samsung this month enabled unauthorized access to secure memory.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 gets the October security update
All of these fixes are now rolling out to the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The rollout may be limited to Israel right now but it should be just a matter of time before units in other regions start receiving the update. As usual, Samsung will seed the new software package over the air (OTA) in batches to all eligible units over the next few days or weeks. If you’re one of the early buyers of the new Galaxy foldable, you should get a notification prompting you to download the OTA update. Alternatively, you can also manually check for updates from the Settings app. Simply go to the Software update menu and tap on Download and install. If an update is available, you will be prompted to download it. If you don’t see any pending updates, check again a few days later. Note that this update doesn’t bring any new features or improvements. It’s all about security fixes that are part of the latest SMR. However, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will soon get a major feature update: Android 13. Yesterday, Samsung revealed that the new Android version will roll out starting later this month. It will bring the company’s One UI 5 custom software. The Galaxy S22 series will get the update first, followed by other models. We will keep you posted.
