Twitter advertising has always been one of the most controversial topics. The company sometimes has to ban certain ads, especially during presidential elections. Climate change is also a hot topic on Twitter. On Friday, Twitter posted a blog post for Earth Day, officially announcing that any advertising that contradicts the scientific consensus on climate change is banned on the platform. “To better serve these conversations, misleading advertisements on Twitter that contradict the scientific consensus on climate change are prohibited, in line with our inappropriate content policy. We believe that climate denialism shouldn’t be monetized on Twitter and that misrepresentative ads shouldn’t detract from important conversations about the climate crisis.” Twitter said.

Twitter rejects climate change denial ads

Of course, this is not the first time that Twitter is putting restrictions on climate change ads on its platform. The company has previously stated that climate change denial ads will be rejected or will be halted. These action are under the company’s inappropriate content policy. Now, environmentalists can rest assured that no ad that rejects the climate change idea will be shown on Twitter. Twitter’s new approach is also informed by authoritative sources, like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Assessment Reports. To better inform users on climate change on the platform, Twitter launched a dedicated climate change Topic. Also, the company offers valid information on the Explore tab, Search, and Trends sections. More tech companies are joining the climate change bandwagon and announcing the decision to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Another social media giant Facebook also stated last year that its emissions are cut by 94% in three years. Moreover, the company is aiming for net-zero across its supply chain by 2030. “We continue to accelerate our sustainability efforts, and we’re laser focused on reducing our own carbon footprint. Through targeted work, we’ve lowered our emissions for the second straight year – even as the company grew.” Twitter noted on its Earth Day blog post. Twitter’s new advertising policies are being announced as the company is involved in possibly transferring ownership to Elon Musk. While the company board sought to block the offer, Musk even announced its strategy for funding the buyout.
